Home Remedies to Get Rid of Eye Sty (Stye)

A sty is called hordeolum in the medical term. It is actually a type of infection of the oil glands present on the eyelids which results in red lump appear on the eyelids. At the stage when it is filled with pus, it will gradually spread over the head.

Sties have common causes like dirt, makeup or other debris that tend to block and infect the oil gland with bacteria. This bacterium is known as staphylococcus that is responsible for about 95 percent of sties. Other than staphylococcus, there are many bacteria that also attack.

People suffered with blepharitis are at higher risk of sties and the eyelash follicles become inflamed due to blepharitis. This problem is generally depending upon the following factors like stress, hygiene and hormonal disturbances. Sties by blepharitis may be more than one at a time. Day by day sty fills with pus and just appears something like a pimple on the eyelid. The usual area of the sties develops on the outer edge of the eyelid but sometimes it may occur on the inner region.

The symptoms include are pain, swelling, burning sensation, itching, swelling, difficulty in blinking, increased sensitivity of light and mucus discharge from the affected eye. Within one or two week, sties will become diminished deliberately. Here are some easy and natural homemade remedies help in healing process and relieve pain.

1.  Warm Compress

The affected area of the eyelid should be applied with the warm compress and it is one of the most wanted remedies for eye sty. The heading pad will help in increasing the blood circulation and speed up the drainage of pus from the sty along with reducing pain and inflammation.
  • Take a clean towel and dip it in hot water then squeeze out the excess water.
  • Close your eyes and place the warm compress on the eyelid.
  • Hold down the compress for five minutes.
  • Do this remedy four times daily until you see it becomes pus free.
  • Wipe out the pus with a clean towel.
  • Again apply the warm compress until the pus is stopped releasing.

2.  Green Tea

Green is natural antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory function that helps in reducing the pain and relief and slowly works on sty to get rid from your eyelids. Green tea contains tannic acid and is effective in preventing infections. A huge variety of nutrients are present in green tea so it is also used for the relieving purpose from sty.
  • In a warm water, dip a green tea bag for few minutes.
  • Strain the remaining water from the bag.
  • Just close your eyes and press the warm moist bag over the affected eyelid.
  • Hold it firmly on that place for five minutes.
  • Repeat the remedy for few times on the daily basis until you see some improvement in the size of the sty.


3.  Coriander Seeds

Sties can be treated with the coriander seeds because of their anti-inflammatory properties. These seeds help in reducing pain, swelling and redness. It will make you feel better within a few days.
  • In a cup of water, add one tsp of coriander seeds and boil it.
  • Remove from heat when it boils and then allow it to cool down.
  • Strain the solution and wash the affected eye from this water.
  • Do this three times daily.

4.  Turmeric

Turmeric also contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions which help in getting rid of sty fistedly. It also reduces the inflammation and infection as a result of this condition.
  • Take two cups of water and add one tbsp. of turmeric then boil the solution until it reduces to half. Cool down the solution and then strain through the cheese cloth. Use this solution for washing the affected eye three times regularly for few days.
  • Mix one tsp of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk and drink it daily before going to bed for one week so it will heal quickly.


5.  Baby Shampoo

To recover the sty, baby shampoo is mild in nature so it is good for cleaning the affected area free from dust and other irritants. Wash the affected area with baby shampoo.
  • In a cup of warm water, add few drops of mild baby shampoo. Mix the shampoo in water well to make it diluted.
  • Soak a cotton ball in this solution.
  • Close your eyes and use the dipped cotton ball to wash the eyelid along with the base of your eyelashes.
  • Rinse the area through warm water.
  • Apply warm compress for five minutes on the eyelids.
  • Follow the remedy few times a day then your sty will disappear within a few days.

6.  Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is another excellent treatment for sties as it contains antibacterial, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe vera reduces redness, inflammation and swelling plus it heals the sty very quickly.
  • Cut a leaf of aloe vera and extract the gel from it.
  • Rub the gel over the infected eyelid.
  • Leave it for 20 minutes then wash your area with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat this remedy few times daily for at least five days.

7. Castor Oil

Castor oil has ricinoleic acid which has anti-inflammatory property so it works to reduce the pain very effectively.
  • First wash the affected eyelid with the mixture of baby shampoo and warm water.
  • Apply warm compress over the eyelid for five minutes.
  • Apply castor oil using the cotton swab on the raised bump of the eyelid.
  • Repeat the remedy twice daily for few days.


8.  Guava Leaves

Guava leaves have a natural power of healing and considered to be a good remedy easily prepared at home for sties. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps in eliminating the redness and swelling of the eyelid.
  • Take minimum three guava leaves in hot water.
  • Soak a cotton cloth in this water then squeeze out the excess water.
  • Put the guava leaves on the warm cloth and wrap it properly.
  • Allow the leaves to cool down then pick only one leaf.
  • Apply this leaf on the eyelid then leave it for five minutes.
  • Repeat the same procedure with other leaves.
  • Do this remedy two times daily for at least four to five days.

9. Potato

Potato is also found to be essential for the sties. Potato has astringent properties that help in the contraction of tissues and reduce the skin irritations. Not only will this but it also reduce the inflammation and pain.
  • Take a medium-sized potato and grate it finely.
  • Put the grated potato in cheesecloth and wrap it properly.
  • Place the cheesecloth on the affected area for 10 minutes.
  • Follow this remedy for three times daily for four days.


10.  Cloves

Cloves work on the pain and reduce the skin irritation and are considered to be an effective remedy for sties. Cloves stop the infection to spread the eye infections due to its antibacterial qualities.
  • Soak at least six cloves in a glass of water for 10 minutes.
  • Strain the water.
  • Soak a cotton cloth in this water and wring out the excess.
  • Hold the cloth on the affected eyelid for few minutes.
  • Follow this remedy three times daily for few days.

In case if these natural remedies are not responding to your eyelid then consult an eye doctor immediately. You should keep your eyelid away from the spreading infections by remembering some precautions.
  • Do not touch the eyes when you have a sty or other infection.
  • Before touching your eyes, make sure you have washed your hands carefully.
  • Never try to pop sty as it will cause the infection to spread to the other eye.
  • Do not apply makeup on the affected eyelid.
  • Never share your eye makeup or applicators with others.
  • Do not wear contact lenses in case you have a sty.
  • Before going to bed, remove your makeup.
